White Russian (Vodka, Coffee Liqueur & Cream)
The Dude's drink — vodka and coffee liqueur over ice, with cream floated on top in a marble swirl. A dessert in a glass: rich, boozy and dead simple. The ratio and the float.

Cultural context
A 1960s riff on the Black Russian (vodka and coffee liqueur), the White Russian adds a float of cream. It was a fairly obscure drink until 1998, when The Big Lebowski made it 'the Dude's' signature and turned it into a cult favourite. Despite the name, it has no connection to Russia beyond the vodka.
The White Russian is dessert in a glass: vodka and coffee liqueur over ice, with cream floated on top in a marble swirl. It’s rich, sweet, dead simple — and, thanks to the Dude, a cult classic.
Three ingredients, one float
Vodka and coffee liqueur make the base; the cream goes on last, floated gently over a spoon. Leave it striped for the look or give it one stir to swirl it into a pale latte colour.
Cream or milk, your call
Heavy cream makes it a proper dessert; whole milk keeps it lighter; half-and-half lands in between. Oat or coconut cream make a genuinely good dairy-free version.
Treat it like pudding
It’s sweet and heavy — one is plenty, after dinner. Skip the cream and you’ve made a Black Russian. For the shaken coffee cocktail instead, see the Espresso Martini. More in the Drinks guide.
Ingredients
- 50 ml (1.75 oz) vodka
- 25 ml (0.75 oz) coffee liqueur (Kahlúa or Tia Maria)
- 25 ml (0.75 oz) heavy cream or whole milk Cream for a rich dessert drink; whole milk for a lighter one. Half-and-half splits the difference.
- ice
Method
Tap a step’s number to check it off as you go.
-
Fill a rocks glass with ice and pour in the vodka and coffee liqueur.
Why: Building over ice keeps it cold and lets the cream float cleanly on the spirit base.
-
Slowly float the cream over the back of a spoon so it sits on top.
Why: Pouring gently keeps the cream layered for that marbled look before you stir.
-
Serve as-is for a striped drink, or give it one gentle stir to swirl the cream through into a pale latte colour.
Why: Un-stirred shows the float; a single stir blends it into a smooth, milky drink — drinker's choice.

Variations
- Black Russian
Leave out the cream entirely for the original — just vodka and coffee liqueur over ice.
- White Caucasian / dairy-free
Use oat or coconut cream in place of dairy for a vegan version (as the Dude himself would sometimes drink).
- Salted / dessert
Add a pinch of salt or a dash of vanilla, or blend with ice for a boozy coffee milkshake.
Serving & Storage
Serve over ice in a rocks glass, stirred or marbled. Rich and sweet — it's really a dessert, so treat it as one.
Pairs with: Dark chocolate, Tiramisu, Coffee cake, After dinner, on its own.
Storage: Make to order — cream separates and won't keep. You can pre-mix the vodka and coffee liqueur (a Black Russian) and add cream per glass.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a White Russian and a Black Russian?
The cream. A Black Russian is just vodka and coffee liqueur over ice; floating cream on top turns it White. Same base, two drinks.
Cream or milk?
Heavy cream makes it rich and dessert-like; whole milk makes it lighter and more drinkable; half-and-half is a good middle ground. All work — it's about how indulgent you want it.
Can I make it dairy-free?
Yes — oat cream or coconut cream both work well and keep the silky texture. It's a genuinely good vegan swap, not just a compromise.
