An Old Fashioned cocktail in a heavy rocks glass over a single large clear ice cube, an expressed orange peel resting on top, warm amber whiskey, on a dark wood bar.

The Old Fashioneds

Spirit, sugar, bitters, ice: the oldest cocktail formula there is. Change the spirit and the sweetener and you can build one from almost anything.

The formula

Spirit + a little sugar + a couple dashes of bitters + a big piece of ice, stirred and expressed with citrus peel.

The Old Fashioned isn’t really a recipe so much as the original way to drink a spirit “the old-fashioned way” — something strong, lightly sweetened, seasoned with bitters, and chilled over a big piece of ice. That template travels: rum and demerara, agave spirits and agave nectar, brandy in Wisconsin supper clubs, maple in autumn. Each keeps the same low, spirit-forward balance; only the base and the sweetener move.
