The formula
A spirit base, stirred or shaken very cold with a modifier (vermouth, liqueur or juice), strained and served up — no ice in the glass.
The original is austere — gin and dry vermouth, stirred cold, a twist or olive — but "martini" long ago became shorthand for any cocktail served up in that unmistakable V-shaped glass. The classics stay close to home (the Vodka Martini, Dirty Martini, Gibson and the wartime Vesper), while the modern "-tini" wing runs on liqueurs and juice (the Espresso Martini, Cosmopolitan, French Martini). What unites them is the ritual: very cold, no ice in the glass, and a moment of ceremony.
