Vodka Martini (Vodka, Vermouth, Shaken or Stirred)
The clean, cold classic: good vodka with a whisper of dry vermouth, chilled hard and served up with an olive or a twist. The smooth, neutral alternative to the gin Martini — and, yes, the one James Bond orders.

Cultural context
As vodka overtook gin in mid-20th-century America, the Martini followed: the Vodka Martini swaps gin's botanicals for vodka's clean neutrality, giving a smoother, more austere drink that lets the ice-cold texture and the garnish speak. James Bond made the shaken version famous ('shaken, not stirred'), though purists stir. Either way, it's the same ritual — very cold, very dry, served straight up.
The Vodka Martini is the clean, cold classic: good vodka with a whisper of dry vermouth, chilled hard and served straight up with an olive or a twist. Smoother and more neutral than the gin Martini — and, famously, the one James Bond orders.
Vodka for gin
Swap gin’s botanicals for vodka’s neutrality and the drink turns austere and smooth, letting the ice-cold texture and the garnish lead. Keep the vodka in the freezer.
Shaken or stirred
Stir for silky and clear; shake for colder and frostier. Both are right. Either way it must be ice-cold in a pre-chilled glass.
One of the martini family
Change the base or modifier and you tour the martini family: gin for the Dry Martini, a cocktail onion for a Gibson, coffee for an Espresso Martini.
Ingredients
- 75 ml (2 1/2 oz) vodka A clean, smooth vodka, kept in the freezer if possible.
- 15 ml (1/2 oz) dry vermouth Adjust to taste; less for a drier Martini. Keep vermouth refrigerated once opened.
- green olives or a lemon twist, to garnish
- ice
Method

-
Add the vodka and dry vermouth to a mixing glass (to stir) or a shaker (to shake) filled with ice.
Why: Plenty of ice chills the drink fast; stirring keeps it silky and clear, shaking makes it colder and slightly cloudy with tiny ice shards.
-
Stir for 30 seconds, or shake for 10–15 seconds, until very cold.
Why: A Martini lives or dies on temperature — it should be ice-cold when poured.
-
Strain into a chilled Martini glass and garnish with olives or a lemon twist.
Why: A pre-chilled glass keeps it cold to the last sip; the garnish (briny olive or bright lemon oil) defines the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions
Shaken or stirred?
Both are correct. Stirring keeps the drink silky, clear and slightly stronger; shaking makes it colder, frothier and a touch more diluted, with tiny shards of ice ('bruised,' purists say). James Bond famously prefers shaken. Choose the texture you like.
How much vermouth makes it 'dry'?
The less vermouth, the drier the Martini. A classic uses around 15 ml (½ oz); an extra-dry Martini uses just a rinse, or a few drops. Keep your vermouth in the fridge — it's a wine and goes stale, which ruins the drink.
Olive or twist?
An olive adds a savoury, briny note; a lemon twist adds bright citrus oil. Both are classic — pick by mood. For a Gibson, garnish with a cocktail onion instead.
